Inside Out 2009
October 25, 2009
“Eco-Art, the Missing Piece of Visual Culture Art Education?”
University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia
09insideout@gmail.com
View Presentation Abstract.
Visual Culture Art Education revolves around investigations into the cultural meanings of everyday visual media and the production of informed critical responses. This presentation explores aspects of VCAE which are commonly neglected such as creative play and self-identity. Eco-conscious art making serves these and other principles while simultaneously spurring reflection of desires and sensibilities shaped by mass media. Three environmentally friendly art projects will demonstrate this and provide educators with a springboard for classroom implementation.

“Art Historical Issues in Visual Culture Art Education” A Panel Discussion
Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec
symposium@education.concordia.ca
View Presentation Abstract.
With the emergence of Visual Culture Art Education (VCAE) as a serious candidate for the new Art Education curricula, discussion of it's many facets is critical. This panel addresses the rarely, and briefly mentioned issue of art history in VCAE. Pagé presents contemporary notions of the Aura, and the Cult in mass media, while Fitch and Kenny discuss the differences between traditional art history, the new art history, and ideas of a visual culture history, and the history of visuality. The processes of content selection and the ideological implications within art educational curricula will also be discussed. This panel aims to demonstrate the significance of art historical study in any art education curriculum, while recognizing the many problems and possibilities it's inclusion faces.

“Zero Gravity Gardening: an Art and Science Lesson Plan.”
Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec
symposium@education.concordia.ca
View Presentation Abstract.
I recently conducted a research project examining the role of an artist within an art and science integrated curriculum approach. Using the Participant Observation method, I recorded my experiences with the Molecules of Life Project (M.L.P.), which partners Art Education students from Concordia University with Science students from UdeM. The goals of my research were to communicate expectations and advice to students wishing to participate in the M.L.P., as well as determine areas of possible improvement for the program.
I present a revision and expansion of an M.L.P. lesson. The art activity utilizes an understanding of the essential elements needed for plan growth. Students are instructed to conceptualize and build a model space garden, a spaceship or space station designed to support plant life. Aspects of the lesson, which value exploration and expression, are grounded in Art Education theory.
While the majority of my presentation will focus on the lesson, I welcome questions regarding my experiences with the M.L.P., the Participant Observation method, and the results of my research.

"An Artist’s Perspective of an Art and Science Education Program"
Concordia Universty, Montreal, Quebec
lblair@alcor.concordia.ca
View Presentation Abstract.
My presentation will outline my experiences as an artist working within the Molecules of Life Project (MLP), which is an integrated curriculum education program designed to teach grade 3 and 4 students about science through the engagement of both science and art lessons. I will provide an understanding of the functions of an artist within the MLP, and give expectations of such an experience. I will also impart suggestions for involving oneself in a co-operative integrated education program.
